Whether you are just starting to learn how to sew or you have been sewing for a little while, there are always a few things that you can do to help yourself. At SewCloth we work with new sewists all the time and we are happy to be able to share some of the tips we have learned along the way with you. In this article, we will be going over the top 7 common sewing mistakes for beginners and how to avoid them.
- Not Reading Through the Pattern Instructions
One of the biggest mistakes we see new sewists make is not reading through the sewing pattern instructions. We know you are excited to start sewing, but don’t skip this step. Read through the pattern completely before you even start cutting, it will help you know what you are getting into and if you have all of the supplies you need. - Incorrect Thread or Sewing Machine Needle
Using the wrong type of thread or sewing machine needle can quickly ruin your project. Make sure you use the correct type of needle for the type of fabric you are sewing. For example, if you are sewing a knit fabric, you will want to use a ballpoint sewing machine needle. If you are sewing a woven fabric, you will want to use a sharp sewing machine needle. The same goes for thread. - Not Measuring Twice
I think everyone has heard the term measure twice cut once. This term is especially true for garment sewing. When you are sewing clothing, the measurements are crucial for the garment to fit right. Make sure you are taking the time to measure your pattern pieces properly, don’t just quickly cut them out. - Not Paying Attention to Fabric Grain
Paying attention to the grain of the fabric will make a big difference in the way your garment hangs on your body. If you cut your fabric on the bias (diagonal), it may have a tendency to stretch out and distort. Most patterns will have a grain line marked on them, make sure you are paying attention to this line when you are cutting out your fabric. - Rushing to Finish a Project
We know you are excited to get your project finished, but don’t rush through it. Rushing through a sewing project can lead to many simple mistakes such as uneven seams or not matching a pattern. Slow down, take your time, and enjoy the process. - Not Ironing as You Go
Ironing as you go is an important step in the sewing process. Ironing your seams as you go will help your finished garment look more professional and last longer. Don’t wait until the end of your project to iron, instead iron each seam as you complete it. - Not Practicing on Scrap Fabric
If you are trying a new skill or stitch, don’t try it on your actual project. Instead, take a few minutes to practice on some scrap fabric first. This will help you feel more comfortable with what you are doing and will help you avoid making a mistake on your project.
Conclusion
While there are many common mistakes you can make while sewing, the ones listed above are the most frequent. By avoiding these mistakes, you will save yourself time, money, and fabric in the long run. We hope you found this article helpful and Happy Sewing!
